At Willingdon Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage provides a nurturing, stimulating and inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity and a love of learning. Through a balance of carefully planned adult-led activities and child-initiated play, children build the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive both academically and socially.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to provide children with the strong foundations and prior knowledge they need to access and succeed in the wider curriculum as they move through the school. While our learning is underpinned by clear curriculum goals and progression, we also recognise the importance of following children's interests, using these as opportunities to deepen engagement, extend learning and foster a sense of ownership in their educational journey.

We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, early reading, writing and mathematics, alongside opportunities for creativity, exploration and physical development. Working closely with families, we ensure that every child feels valued, supported and ready to make a successful transition into Key Stage 1.

At the heart of our practice is the SHREC approach (Sharing attention, Responding, Expanding and Communicating), which supports the development of children's communication, language and interaction skills. Adults use high-quality interactions to engage children in meaningful conversations, build vocabulary, extend thinking and encourage sustained shared thinking. By harnessing children's interests and responding to their ideas, we create rich learning experiences that promote language development and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
