Willingdon Primary School

Careers Learning

We are delighted to work with East Sussex Primary Careers Hub to develop our careers learning from EYFS to Year 6.

Dream, Believe, Achieve

At our school, we want every child to develop high aspirations and believe that they can achieve their goals. We help children discover the wide range of opportunities available to them and understand how the skills they learn today can help shape their future.

Careers education in primary school is not about asking children to choose a job. Instead, it is about broadening horizons, challenging stereotypes, building confidence and helping children understand the world beyond school. Inspired by good practice in primary careers education, we provide opportunities for pupils to meet a variety of people, learn about different occupations and develop the skills needed for future success.

We aim to:

  • Raise aspirations for all pupils.
  • Help children recognise their strengths and talents.
  • Introduce a wide variety of careers and workplaces.
  • Challenge gender and social stereotypes.
  • Develop employability skills such as teamwork, communication, resilience and problem-solving.
  • Help pupils understand the importance of education in achieving their ambitions.
  • Build confidence and ambition for the future.

What Does Careers Education Look Like in Our School?

Children experience careers-related learning through:

Classroom Learning

Links are made between subjects and real-life careers. For example:

  • Scientists in Science
  • Engineers in Design Technology
  • Authors, journalists and publishers in English
  • Architects in Mathematics
  • Environmental careers in Geography
  • Historians, museum curators and archaeologists in History

Visitors and Role Models

Throughout the year, we invite visitors to share their experiences and inspire our pupils. These may include:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Emergency services personnel
  • Engineers
  • Business owners
  • Artists and musicians
  • Sports professionals
  • Community leaders

Skills for Success

As well as learning knowledge, we help children develop important life skills:

✅ Communication

✅ Teamwork

✅ Creativity

✅ Problem Solving

✅ Leadership

✅ Resilience

✅ Confidence

✅ Independence

These skills will support children throughout their education and future careers.

Challenging Stereotypes

At our school we believe:

  • Girls can be engineers.
  • Boys can be nurses.
  • Anyone can be a scientist.
  • Anyone can be an artist.
  • Success is possible for everyone.

We actively challenge stereotypes and encourage children to pursue their interests and talents.

Careers Spotlight

In our PSHE Floor Books, we signpost our careers learning through careers spotlights.

How Parents Can Help

Parents and carers play a vital role in raising aspirations.

You can support your child by:

  • Talking positively about learning.
  • Discussing different jobs and careers.
  • Sharing your own career journey.
  • Encouraging curiosity and ambition.
  • Visiting libraries, museums and places of interest.
  • Talking about the skills used in everyday life.

If you would be willing to visit school to talk about your job or profession, please contact the school office.

Our Careers Vision

"If you can dream it, you can achieve it."

We want every child to leave our school believing in themselves, understanding their strengths, and feeling excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
